We will fly in/out of Frankfurt, but have no desire to stay in Frankfurt, so our 16 nights can be spent elsewhere. I would like to leave approximately 4-5 nights in Austria, but the other nights can be spent in Southern Germany. I'm open to hotels if they have family sleeping rooms, but if not, we will need an apartment, so if anyone has any good suggestions, please advise.

I think you have a good list and would not add to it as this way you will have enough time to enjoy the places on your list.

Otherwise, your itinerary simply has too much hotel changes for me and is not a trip I would enjoy. While in Berchtesgaden we plan on visiting/seeing Lake Konigssee, Jennerbahn and Grossglockner Pass. The train plan assumes you can locate accommodations you want near stations. If you definitely want an apartment rental, trains will likely limit your choice of apartment, as most are located in outlying areas. Finding one that you want where you want it may be a challenge.
